In October 1930, 78 per cent of peasant families were still individual
producers, directed towards the market. The October 21 issue of Pravda
wrote:
`(I)n the circumstances of the present autumn
when there has been a good harvest ... in the circumstances of high
speculative prices for grain, meat and vegetables at the markets, certain
middle peasant households are rapidly transformed into well-to-do and
kulak house-holds.'
